How to Install a Remote Car Starter System?

A car alarm and the keyless entry system can do more than saving money on your car insurance and increase the value of your car since they are important safety features. A car alarms can prevent thieves from stealing your vehicle, hence it is highly valuable while a keyless entry system can help quickly enter your car in a parking without any worries. If your vehicle does not come with a car alarm and remote entry system, you can install these devices yourself. This work requires experience in automotive wiring, however.

The Installation Process

Step 1

Acquire the wiring diagram of the vehicle to determine the codes and colors for locations of vehicle wiring. Find out the type of door lock system and determine the correct relay door lock wire procedure.

Step 2

Using the diagram, you can assess which cables to keep and which to remove. For example, find an unused channel and shorten the cable about six inches long. Use duct tape to mount clipped to the main harness cords and use duct tape to pack the rest of the wiring. Leave four inches exposed wire for each connection end.

Step 3

See the wiring diagram to find the wire feed head coach, ignition cables, cable boot, and position of light cables. With a knife, remove a small portion of the vinyl covering of the cables connected to cables of keyless entry. Use wire strippers to strip the ends of the main power cables, grounding, power switch and parking lights. Connect the ends of these cables with keyless entry cables. Connect the black side of the ground wire to the vehicle chassis.

Step 4

Using the wiring diagram, determine which system locks the door that comes with the vehicle. Directly connect keyless entry cables to the vehicle wiring system if there is a negative closing door installed. Carefully, connect two relays of 30 amp wire and secure the ends of the wires of the vehicle if there is a positive locking system of doors or five-wire system of reverse door lock installed.

Step 5

Connect the main circuit board of the keyless entry into the harness. Test to see if the locks and parking lights work. Using an electric drill and a 3/8 inch, install the LED on the board.

  • Get a new starter in the engine compartment and slide the nose cone on the starter in the hole in the cover of the hood. Install the two mounting bolts on the new starter and tighten to 66 ft-lbs with a torque wrench.
  • Install the battery cable to the terminal ‘B’. Install the retaining nut and tighten with a wrench. Plug the wiring harness in the ‘S’ terminal of the solenoid. Now make sure that the attachment tabs snap into the place.
  • Install the end of the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten the screw with a wrench.
