Why Handmade Crafts Are The Environmentally Sustainable Option

As we all know, handmade crafts are becoming popular recently; let us dive into the creative world of gifting personalized gifts. People like to purchase handmade arts instead of crafts made in factories by machines. Personalized gift options such as DIY gifts,  a set of personally selected flowers, handmade home decor and many more are increasing day by day. There can be a few ideal reasons behind it, as these handmade crafts are environment-friendly compared to crafts made in factories.

The reasons are as follows:

  1. Use of natural products for manufacturing handmade crafts

Using natural products and biodegradable materials can help reduce carbon footprint and make the manufacturing process more eco-friendly and safe for mankind. Biodegradable products can be used as an alternative to plastics while making handmade crafts. In contrast, plastics are widely used in factories that are harmful to the environment and are non-biodegradable.

  1.  Use of more energy-efficient methods

Handmade products are more energy-efficient as their manufacturing process saves a lot of resources such as water, electricity as well as power as compared to the goods made in factories as it requires a lot of water to cool down the hot working machines and a lot of electricity is required to manufacture goods and crafts made in factories.

For example, manufacturing leather bags made in a factory takes approximately 160 liters of water, and 8 kg of CO2 is released, generating 5 kg of organic waste. In contrast, handmade goods are completely environmentally friendly and do not produce any organic waste at all.

  1.  No use of polyethylene (PE)

Most of the crafts and goods manufactured in factories use polyethylene and other plastic forms that are not recyclable and not good for the environment. This can lead to more inorganic waste, and the place where this non-biodegradable waste is dumped eventually becomes unfit for agriculture and even for other uses. Whereas handmade crafts are made using natural items and materials that are completely safe for the environment, the waste produced is mostly organic.

  1. Use of clay and paper

Most handmade crafts are made using paper and clay derived from nature as clay minerals are composed of silica, alumina, or magnesium or both, water and appreciable quantities of potassium, sodium, and calcium, i.e., they do not harm the environment. Also, paper is made and obtained from wood, rubber, cotton, wheat straw, sugar cane waste, flax, bamboo, linen rags, and hemp, which is again eco-friendly and can be recycled and used again for different purposes. Moreover, the paper helps cut down toxic waste, which has become a cause of major concern for all nations.

This also helps save a huge amount of energy as it is generally made from locally available materials, which helps cut down the transportation costs and save fuel. Also, they are made from unbleached paper, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The materials used to make bacteria and other microorganisms can easily decompose these handmade crafts. Thus, they take less time to break up into simpler forms.

  1.  Waste management

The extra materials left out for making handmade crafts such as popsicles, wooden craft sticks, pompoms, paper towel rolls, paper plates, clay, corks, buttons, styrofoam balls, rubber can be used again for making other crafts and can be used for creating different items. Thus, it helps reduce the waste produced, but in the case of crafts made in factories using polyethylene, leather, metal, glass, stones have more inorganic waste.

These materials cannot be easily disintegrated by microorganisms and bacteria, leading to more inorganic waste, which is not good for our environment and causes land pollution.

  1. No Exploitation of natural resources

We all know that natural resources are crucial for our survival, and we should prevent their exploitation. Handmade crafts do not misuse any natural resources. Its manufacturing process is completely safe for the environment. In contrast, the arts manufactured in factories use different kinds of metals, stones as well as glass, and its misuse can be a threat to our natural resources; also, many animals are killed to obtain their skin and bones to produce crates and different types of leather bags which is a threat to flora and fauna.

  1. No pollution is caused

Manufacturing of handmade crafts does not cause any type of pollution but in case of other skills made in large factories produce a lot of air, noise and land pollutions as they smoke coming out of the furnaces goes directly into the atmosphere without being treated and filtered can cause depletion of ozone layer also these heavy machines produce a lot of noise which can cause Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) that can lead to high blood pressure, heart diseases, sleep disturbances and anxiety. These problems can affect all age groups, especially children.

Thus, we can conclude that handmade crafts are an environmentally sustainable option from all the above points.
